Smoking Rates Fall ln Oklahoma

Smoking rates continue to drop in Oklahoma.

The state Health Department says the number of adult smokers in Oklahoma has dropped to historically low levels.

According to an emailed news release, Oklahoma ranks 39 nationally for adult smoking rates in 2012. The state came in at number 47 the year before. By percentages, 23.3 percent of adults were smokers in 2012.

Health Commissioner Terry Cline calls it “fantastic” that Oklahoma is out of the bottom ten state for smoking rates.

That health department says smoking is Oklahoma's leading preventable cause of death.

We like stories about things that wash up on beaches, such as the softball-size eyeball that appeared on the Atlantic Ocean shore in Florida last fall.

So our eyes lit up when we saw this headline: "Mysterious 'Horned' Sea Monster Washes Ashore in Spain; Officials Baffled."

New Website Looking For Opinions On Legislation

ECapitol's Shawn Ashley reports the state House of Representatives has "soft launched" a new website designed to allow citizens to submit ideas for its members to consider.

House Media Director Jason Sutton says the site is intended to encourage citizens to be more involved in state government.

Eventually the site will include individual pages for each House member wishing to participate, according to Sutton.

OKC Taking Up Streetcar Route Sept. 24

While some opponents says a streetcar does not deliver enough bang for the transit buck, the MAPS 3 plan moves ahead.

A news release from the city says the council will consider a MAPS 3 route framework for the streetcar Sept. 24.

Slain Pastor's Mother Wants Her Daughter's Effects

With the still unsolved slaying of a pastor inside her Anadarko church now four years old, another pastor in the city says he's gotten a concealed carry permit and sometimes carries his weapon even when delivering his sermon.

Friday marks the fourth anniversary of the death of Carol Daniels inside Christ Holy Sanctified Church. There have been no arrests or suspects identified in the case, which the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says remains open.
