Event Description

The new photography exhibition, PHOTO/SYNTHESIS, examines the idea of Native American portrayal in photography by taking a similar approach to early 20th century photographer Edward Curtis. However, contemporary Navajo photographer Will Wilson empowers his sitters by inviting them to select their own portrayal before using his Civil War-era camera to photograph and develop his works onsite. Last summer, he and FJJMA curator heather ahtone visited seven Native tribal communities in Oklahoma to create more than 50 new photographs for the exhibition. Additionally, PHOTO/SYNTHESIS shows works by Curtis from the museum’s permanent collection for context.
