| | What to do.... home damage | Thursday February 11 | Following are some guidelines from Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner Kim Holland to help you deal with a damage to your home.
If you decide to file a claim, call your insurance company or agent with your policy number and other relevant information as soon as possible. Cooperate fully with the insurance company, and ask what documents, forms and data you will need.
Take photographs/video of the damage.
Make the repairs necessary to prevent further damage to your property (i.e., cover broken windows, leaking roofs and damaged walls). Do not have permanent repairs made until your insurance company has inspected the property and you have reached an agreement on the cost of repairs.
Save all receipts, including those from the temporary repairs covered by your insurance policy.
If your home is damaged to the extent that you cannot live there, ask your insurance company if you have coverage for additional living expenses incurred while repairs are being made. Save all receipts to document these costs.
The following events are typically not covered by the standard homeowners insurance policy:
Interior water damage from a storm, when there is no damage to the roof or walls of your home.
Damage as the result of a flood.
Removal of fallen trees (if the trees do not land on and damage your home).
Food spoilage due to a power outage.
Water damage from backed-up drains or sewers.
Contact the Oklahoma Insurance Department If you have a concern or question about your insurance or a complaint, please contact the Oklahoma Insurance Department's Consumer Hotline at http://www.oid.ok.gov or (800) 522-0071.

| | Signs of the Times: The First Amendment and Religious Symbolism | Friday February 12 | The University of Oklahoma College of Law and the Oklahoma Law Review are hosting a First Amendment symposium on Friday, February 12, entitled: "Signs of the Times: The First Amendment and Religious Symbolism."
Recent events in Stigler, Oklahoma, have drawn national attention. In 2004 a monument that included the Ten Commandments was installed on the Haskell County courthouse lawn. The symposium will focus on the Haskell County case and the Establishment Clause issues raised by displays of religious symbols on government property. Session I will feature two speakers: Peter Irons, author of God on Trial and Professor Emeritus at the University of California-San Diego; and Thomas Berg, Professor of Law at the University of St. Thomas. Following their speeches, the speakers will take questions from the audience. Session II will feature a panelist discussion moderated by Professor Joseph Thai of the OU College of Law. The panel will include Professor Harry Tepker, OU College of Law; Professor Carl Esbeck, University of Missouri School of Law; Professor Eduardo Peñalver, Cornell Law School; Kevin Theriot, counsel for the County; and Micheal Salem, counsel for Mr. Green. The panelists will take questions following their discussion. The public is encouraged to attend both sessions in the Bell Courtroom at the OU College of Law. | | State Data Center Census Safety Tips | Monday February 15 | To protect Oklahomans and prevent fraud associated with the 2010 U.S. Census, the State Data Center has several tips to ensure citizens are not involved in a false census scenario.
1. The Census Bureau does not conduct the 2010 Census via e-mail or the Internet. If you think you are the victim of a phishing or e-mail scam from someone falsely representing the Census Bureau, forward the e-mail or Web site URL to the Census Bureau, then delete the original e-mail.
2. The Census Bureau does NOT request credit card numbers, bank account numbers, PIN numbers, or passwords. While various surveys do ask questions about income sources, income amounts, household or business expenses, and other financial topics, the Bureau will never ask for account numbers or access codes.
3. You can confirm that a person really does work for the US Census Bureau. If someone identifies himself or herself as a Census Bureau employee, you can verify that information by contacting the National Processing Center at 1-866-226-2864.
The Census Bureau offers advice on how to confirm a survey is legitimate. If you have questions about a survey received in the mail, you can consult the Census Bureau’s Are You In a Survey? page, or call the National Processing Center at 1 (866) 226-2864.
5. You can find out what Census activities are currently taking place in your local area. If you have questions about address canvassing or public outreach activities taking place in your local area or coming up in the near future, contact the Oklahoma City Local Census Office at (405) 254-9140.
