| Artist Survival Kit Workshop: Making a Statement | Saturday September 11 |
Being an artist is not just about being creative. Just like any small business owner, artists need skills in business to succeed. The Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition (OVAC), a statewide non-profit that supports visual artists, offers the Artist Survival Kit (A.S.K.) program to teach some of those skills.
The A.S.K. program is designed to help artists acquire the relevant and necessary entrepreneurial skills to achieve their personal career goals and to build community through peer support and exchange. Each year, OVAC offers a series of at least six workshops on topics such as marketing, tax tips, assembling a professional portfolio, and more. Artists learn from expert speakers, as well as each other. Having an opportunity to meet other artists face-to-face is a bonus for attendees.
An upcoming A.S.K. workshop in Tulsa will help artists write their artist statement, an essential part of their portfolio. Led by Elizabeth Downing, artist and writer, and Janice McCormick, writer, “Making a Statement” will be held at the Harwelden Mansion, 2210 S Main St, Tulsa on Saturday, September 11 from Noon-3:00 pm. The workshop is sponsored in part by the Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa and the Visual Arts Center of Tulsa.
Other workshops this season will address finding new markets for your art, documenting your art in photos, tax tips, and marketing and selling art online. Full workshop listings are available at www.ArtistSurvivalKit.org.
The A.S.K. workshops are organized by OVAC and sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Oklahoma Arts Council.
Workshops are $20 for general public or $15 for OVAC members, with additional discounts for early registration. Scholarships are available. Registration is available by email at office@ovac-ok.org, by phone at (405) 879-2400, or online at www.ArtistSurvivalKit.org.

| OVAC's 12x12 Art Show and Sale | Saturday September 25 |
For one-night only on September 25, 2010, a downtown warehouse will be illuminated with the works of 150 Oklahoma artists for the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition’s 12x12 Art Show & Sale. To be held at the Fred Jones Industries Building, 900 W. Main in downtown Oklahoma City, this highly anticipated event raises vital funds for artists in Oklahoma while offering audiences a one-of-a-kind art experience.
The 12x12 Art Show & Sale provides an evening of art by some of Oklahoma’s finest artists, live music, delectable food and fun. Many art lovers begin or grow their art collection at this event. With 150 Oklahoma artists participating, a wide variety of styles and media are represented. Each artist submits one piece that is twelve-by-twelve-inches or smaller.
The artwork is sold in a silent and blind auction, meaning bidders won’t know what others have bid. Bids for each piece begin at $168. Another option for the collector who can’t risk losing a piece of art in the auction is “Buy It Now.” This alternative lets the buyer trump the auction and buy the artwork right away. Funds raised from the sale of art will support OVAC programs such as curated exhibitions, grants, professional development workshops, young artist events and crucial publications.
The 2009 12x12 raised over $60,000 through sponsorships and art sales with more than 1,000 in attendance. Margo Shultes von Schlageter and Sam Fulkerson are the Volunteer Chairs of the 12x12 Committee this year.
Preview the art on the 12x12 website at www.12x12okc.org or visit the gallery in the lobby of Leadership Square, 211 N. Robinson, September 1-20. To see the exhibition in its entirety, art lovers will have to attend the one-night only event.
Tickets to the 12x12 Art Show & Sale are available by phone at 405-879-2400 or online at www.12x12okc.org. Tickets can also be purchased at the following outlets: Full Circle Bookstore, New Leaf Florist, Sara Sara Cupcakes and Guestroom Records (OKC & Norman). Tickets are $24 in advance and $30 at the door. Dress for the party is evening casual and drinks will be served from a cash bar. Food is provided by 30 area restaurants. The Official 12x12 After Party will be held on 9th Street, including Iguana Mexican Grill, Pachinko Parlor and Sara Sara Cupcakes. Show your 12x12 ticket at any of these locations to receive special offers.
