Monday on Oklahoma Voices: This Place Called China
KGOU Local NewsAs the Olympic Games get underway, KGOU continues exploring China through the eyes of Oklahomans. News Director Scott Gurian talks with a child psychologist who counseled survivors of the Sichuan earthquake, and he gets insights from experts on China's geopolitical and economic influence and recent cultural changes. Throughout the program, an Oklahoman now studying in China will give us an audio tour of the city of Tianjin. Tune in Monday, August 11 at 11 a.m. for Oklahoma Voices.

And, if you missed last week's Oklahoma Voices on China's restrictions on news media trying to report from that country, you can listen from the KGOU archives.

NPR Set to Cover Olympics in Beijing
Beware the Spoiler!
The 2008 Games have begun, and NPR News is poised to cover the competitive events, the athletes, and the culture of the host country. The Olympics 2008 page at NPR.org has links to the events and results, the competing countries, a medal count, and even 10 'must-watch' stories from the Games.

Beijing 2008NPR will be reporting competition results in newscasts and on its news magazinzes – sometimes before U.S. viewers have a chance to watch tape-delayed events on television. Uri Berliner, Deputy Editor with NPR’s National Desk, says the decision to do so was governed by news judgment. "We see the Olympics as a news event, and our goal is to report news as it happens. To withhold results or provide so-called spoiler alerts each time we report on a new gold medal winner is not practical, especially in this time of instant communication," he said. We hope KGOU listeners won't find these 'spoilers' too frustrating.

Wherever NPR reporters go, they inform us about the local culture and people. NPR.org has an extensive Explore China section, including some of the reports correspondents were preparing when the devastating earthquake struck last May. Reporters found some surprises, too, like this video of an American in Chengdu.
