Update on KGOU Expansion Projects
|
|
Early this year, KGOU launched three projects to build new stations in Woodward, Ada and Chickasha, adding or improving public radio service to thousands of Oklahomans.
We have been meeting with members of these communities, and to date, supporters have pledged about 10 percent of our goal for the Woodward project, about seven percent for Ada, and about four percent for the Chickasha project. The Woodward and Ada projects are eligible for federal grants to finance most of the costs, if we can raise the remainder. A substantial portion of these funds must be pledged or raised by next January for these projects to move forward.
See more details of each project on our New Horizons pages and use our online pledge form to contribute. As you plan your charitable giving over the next few months, please consider these capital projects and join us as we work to expand public radio's listenership.

KGOU's Friday Nights Live to Include Headliner Concerts
KGOU's Programming department is refining the program schedule, with an addition to our Friday evening lineup. We're calling this new program Headliner Showcase, and it will feature concerts, recorded live, by locally and nationally recognized performers representing a variety of musical styles. We think this will be the perfect way to cap off our Friday Nights Live lineup, airing at midnight Fridays and into the wee hours Saturdays.
We'll begin Friday, August 28 at midnight with a special concert from songwriter and poet Leonard Cohen. In future programs we’ll hear performances from Wanda Jackson and Travis Linville (recorded live during Norman’s Summer Breeze concert series), and Joan Baez, Gillian Welch, Arlo Guthrie and Mavis Staples performing at the Newport Folk Festival. We hope you'll enjoy this new weekly program on KGOU.
Jazz Retrospective ~ The '59 Sound Radio Special and CD Giveaway!
In 1959, jazz innovators like Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and Dave Brubeck were trying new approaches and concepts that still influence the genre today. KGOU will broadcast a one-hour radio special the morning of Sunday, August 30, featuring highlights of these artists' classic albums, Sketches of Spain, Mingus Ah Um and Time Out, as well as the inspiration and ideas behind the music from noted performers and Jazz historians.
In a promotion through Legacy Recordings, KGOU will give away the newly released Legacy Edition multi-CD set of Miles Davis's Sketches of Spain, Charles Mingus's Mingus Ah Um, and The Dave Brubeck Quartet's Time Out. We'll hold a drawing for winners on Friday, August 28.
Jeff Buckley's Grace Around the World Radio Special and CD/DVD Giveaway!
With the enormous talent evident in his 1994 studio album, Grace, singer-songwriter-guitarist Jeff Buckley was a rising star when he met an untimely death at the age of 30.
KGOU presents a one-hour radio special on Sunday, August 23 at 11 a.m. on the life and music of Jeff Buckley. The special features interviews with family members, journalists, musicians, bandmates and friends.
KGOU will give away a newly released CD and DVD set from Legacy Recordings featuring Buckley's performances on the BBC Late Show, MTV Europe, and live concerts around the world. DVD bonus features include behind-the-scenes footage and interviews. Drawing will be held Monday, August 31.

A Dark Journey Into A Killer's 'Personal Effects'
For everyone who's ever wanted to e-mail or call a character in a book, authors J.C. Hutchins and Jordan Weisman have created a "multiplatform transmedia experience" called Personal Effects: Dark Art. The novel allows readers to peruse the main character's business cards, photos, and legal documents, while phone numbers and websites provide more clues about the story. Read an excerpt and listen to the Weekend Edition interview from Saturday, August 15, at NPR.org.
Taking The Great American Road Trip, Google-Style
Marc Horowitz and Pete Baldes wanted to embark on a cross-country road trip, but quickly realized it would be cheaper to see the country virtually.
The two friends are hitting the road through Google Maps' street view feature, not only traveling virtually, but also stopping to check out spots en route. Listen to their explanation from Weekend Edition on Sunday, August 16, and ride along with them, at NPR.org.
A Real-Life School of Rock
Looking for a boost on your climb to rock stardom? Check out the University of Central Oklahoma's Academy of Contemporary Music. Founded by Flaming Lips manager Scott Booker, the school aims to offer not just music theory and performance classes, but an inside knowledge of the music business. Weekend Edition profiled the school Saturday, August 15 – listen from the NPR.org archives.
