'Goodbye and Good Luck'
The words of Edward R. Murrow come to mind as KGOU bids a fond farewell to one of our own. Scott Gurian came to KGOU in 2004, and has served listeners well during his tenure as News Director. But duty calls, and Scott is moving back to New Jersey to take care of family matters.
We're giving him a grand send-off with a special Oklahoma Voices on Monday, December 22 at 11 a.m. Scott will listen back to his favorite reports, some of them award-winners, and he'll give us a behind-the-scenes look at how he produced those reports.
Also, we're hosting a going-away reception for Scott on Friday, December 19, from 4 - 6 p.m. here at the station. Please join us! If you can't make it, Scott would welcome your e-mails, or you may call 325-0523 and leave a message as you would like it replayed on the air. We wish Scott the best as he makes this transition to the next phase of his career.
Sour Economy Prompts Layoffs, Cancellations at NPR
KGOU staff started hearing rumors early Wednesday, December 10, and by mid-afternoon confirmation came from NPR's acting CEO Dennis Haarsager: NPR is making big budget cuts and laying off employees.
The public announcement came during All Things Considered, that NPR is canceling two daily radio programs — Day to Day and News and Notes — as part of a broader effort to close a projected budget shortfall of $23 million for the current fiscal year. Haarsager said the culprit is a projected loss in corporate underwriting due to the current economic climate.
Overall, NPR will cut seven percent of its work force – 64 people laid off and 21 vacant positions left unfilled – and slash expenses further around the company. Media correspondent David Folkenflik reported on the cuts for his employer; you can hear his report here.
The two canceled shows will go off the air on March 20. KGOU airs one of them, Day to Day, and we'll be looking for a replacement program.
Oklahoma Voices: Embedded with the 45th
On Oklahoma Voices next Monday, December 15, KGOU News Director Scott Gurian speaks with Oklahoma Gazette reporter Ben Fenwick about his experience embedding with the Oklahoma National Guard’s 45th Infantry Brigade in Iraq earlier this year.
Then on the December 22 program, we pay a visit to a small office park in Hackettstown, New Jersey, where Dwight Foster is attempting to perform the car-lover’s equivalent of raising Lazarus from the dead. He’s been hired to restore the rusted, 1957 Plymouth Belvedere that was unearthed from a time capsule in Tulsa last year as part of Oklahoma’s centennial celebrations. Also, we reminisce with Scott Gurian about his favorite stories. Oklahoma Voices airs Mondays at 11 a.m. on KGOU.
