NPR Celebrates Release of Journalist Imprisoned in Iran

NPR has reported extensively on Saberi's arrest and imprisonment, and the secret one-day trial that resulted in an eight-year sentence and conviction on charges of spying for the U.S. You can read the latest developments at NPR.org.

NPR President and CEO Vivian Schiller released a statement which reads, "We are overjoyed at the news that Roxana Saberi is to be released, and are grateful to everyone who has shared in our efforts to gain her freedom. Roxana is an established and respected professional journalist and we look forward to her return to her craft."

Cruise the Nile with Diane Rehm - October 27-November 10
The voyage begins in Cairo and follows the Nile deep into upper Egypt and on to Luxor, Edfu and other sites where Egyptians and then Greeks built monuments of stone that would withstand the ages. The Cross-Culture Journeys cruise package includes 6-nights aboard the cruise ship MS Jaz Legacy and 6 nights at 5-star hotels. Thirteen sightseeing tours are included as well.
This Nile cruise comes at a very special time for Diane Rehm, who in 2009 will be celebrating 30 years of broadcast conversation on WAMU. America's Battalion: Getting Ready to Deploy
NPR NewsThis spring, the Second Battalion of the Eighth Marine Regiment – known as "America's Battalion" – deploys to Afghanistan. NPR News will be following them throughout their deployment, and will cover both the Marines in Afghanistan and their families here at home. The first report of this occasional series is scheduled to air Wednesday, May 13 during All Things Considered. In it, J.J. Sutherland talks with members of the "2/8" in Camp Lejeune, NC, as they prepare to spend the next seven months in a war zone.


Memorial Weekend Specials Highlight Local Music Festivals
Tune to KGOU over Memorial Day weekend for music from the 2009 Norman Music Festival and 2008’s Jazz In June concert series.

Thousands of rock music fans flocked to downtown Norman on April 25, as the Norman Music Festival presented live performances from Other Lives, Sheree Chamberlain, The Starlight Mints, and Of Montreal. Festival organizers have allowed KGOU to offer highlights from this year’s event on Friday, May 22, beginning at 7 p.m.

Traditionally at KGOU, Memorial Day weekend also marks our annual broadcast of Jazz In June festival highlights. This year’s broadcast will feature 2008's concert, with Saffire – the Uppity Blues Women, Miss Blues and the Blue Notes, Bruce Benson, Barrie Lee Hall and The Duke Ellington Small Band, and Chuck Mangione. Tune in Saturday,May 23 and Sunday, May 24 from 1-5 p.m. each day.
