KGOU Membership 'Campaign' Message:
Only Two Days On the Air!
|
KGOU Fall 'Campaign' |
| By now you may have heard that KGOU's Fall Membership Drive will contain only two days of on-air fundraising – not a full week, or even four days.
|
Soon you'll be hearing some fun announcements on the air about our 'campaign', but the reasoning behind it is more serious: Throughout the year, listeners rely on KGOU and NPR for knowledge and insight into complex ideas and issues. And with the ongoing global economic crisis and a historic contest for our nation's highest elected office, we don't want to interrupt that flow of information any more than necessary. But it is necessary that KGOU raise funds to continue to provide this service.
The outcome of this experimental two-day membership drive will be determined by listeners like you. We're relying on existing members who are up for renewal this fall, but we also need participation from listeners who have not contributed in order to reach our goal.
Please take a moment to make your donation through our online pledge form, or through the mail by returning your renewal form. Of course, you always have the option of calling in during the on-air drive, October 23 and 24. Your contribution will help to keep the information flowing on KGOU.

Calling All Phone Volunteers
We're anticipating a fun, but busy, time as new and renewing members call in during KGOU's 2-day membership drive, October 23 and 24, and we'll need a full slate of volunteers to help answer the phones.
Sign up online on our volunteer page, or call Membership Director Laura Knoll at 325-0022 if you can help anytime during those days.
NPR Host Featured on Slate Videos
"A card table, two microphones, and NPR's Alex Chadwick" is how Slate V describes its series Interviews 50 Cents. Of course, there's also a camera crew nearby to capture the interchange on video. Alex sets up his table in cities across the country to interview passers-by. Some are light, some more serious, but all of the interviews offer a glimpse into the lives of the people who respond to the invitation to stop for a chat. Alex has worked on several NPR programs over his 30+ years at the network, but currently he hosts Day to Day weekdays at noon on KGOU.
Fuel Economy Tips from Click and Clack
High gasoline prices draining your budget? A few tips from Car Talk hosts Tom and Ray Magliozzi can help listeners squeeze the most out of their tanks by tweaking driving, car maintenance, and transportation choices. See their tips here, and listen to Car Talk Saturdays at 9 a.m. or Tuesdays at 11 a.m. on KGOU.
Highlights from the Networks:
'Planet Money' Explores Global Economy
Feeling lost in a galaxy of news about the economy? You're certainly not alone, and to provide some education, news and other pertinent information about our global economy, NPR has launched "Planet Money", an NPR multimedia team providing content for a new blog, Twitter feed, and podcast.
Regular contributors include Adam Davidson, David Kestenbaum, Alex Blumberg and Laura Conaway, and some experts outside of NPR will also be contributing posts to the blog. We're all in this economy together, so here's an opportunity to learn from, and connect with, each other.
Learning To Thrive With Attention Deficit Disorder
Emily Algire earned good grades in elementary school. But by middle school, there were signs that something was wrong. Emily was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder. After being coached with specific learning strategies, she is now entering her second year of college with an upbeat attitude and good grades.

Kitchen Window: Taking The Risk Out Of Risotto
Food editor Susan Russo tells Kitchen Window's Bonny Wolf that making this much-bemoaned dish isn't as hard as many think. She says practice and the proper technique can open the door to countless variations of the creamy rice dish. The interview, plus recipes and cooking tips are at NPR.org.
NPR Music: The Cocktail Party Guide To John Coltrane
If your knowledge of this jazz legend's recordings is sadly lacking, here's a "bluffer's guide" to conversing about Coltrane. NPR Music has five of his classic recordings from different stages in his career; you can hear them and get a crash course from this week's Take Five jazz sampler.
