President Addresses Students, Congress
KGOU and NPR News will provide live coverage of President Obama's prime time address to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday, September 9. The President is expected to focus on his plans for the nation's health care system.
Melissa Block hosts the special, with analysis from NPR's Health Policy Correspondent, Julie Rovner. Coverage will begin at 7 p.m., and will include the president's address and a Republican response, if possible.
Today, President Obama told schoolchildren to stay in school and study hard in a televised speech that had some conservatives questioning his motives. NPR.org has a report on the speech, and a transcript is available from the White House press office.

Fall Membership Drive Compressed into Two Days!
|
In recent years, the mainstream media have become more contentious and ideological, and discussions of important issues are being dominated by emotion rather than by facts and reasoned analysis. We hope you'll agree that public radio and KGOU are different - we strive to bring you the whole story, with factual information and civil discussion about important issues.
KGOU's two-day drive was so successful last fall, we're trying it again! This fall's membership drive is coming up next month, and once again we're asking listeners to help us keep it short by renewing beforehand.
Renewal notices were mailed recently to existing members who pledged last fall. You can either mail your pledge back to us, or use our online pledge form.

New System for Online Pledges
You might notice we have a new online form for credit card pledges. We're always looking for ways to improve security of your personal information, and recently the university presented us with an opportunity to upgrade our system.
The new form has another advantage: It processes pledge transactions on the exact dates you choose. If you need help using the new form, please contact Membership Director Laura Knoll at (405) 325-0022 or toll-free at 866-533-2470.
[Editor's note: The new online pledge form will not be available from September 18 through 28. We apologize for any inconvenience.]
Amazon Road: The Interoceanic Highway
When completed, the Interoceanic Highway will stretch across South America from the Atlantic to the Pacific, creating an overland trade route to Asia for economic giant Brazil. The last leg of the road is being finished now in Peru, but not without a great deal of controversy. Its route takes it right through the heart of the Peruvian Amazon - one of the most biodiverse places in the world. NPR's Lourdes Garcia-Navarro has a series of reports all next week on All Things Considered. For more photos and an interactive map, visit The Picture Show at NPR.org.
The Financial Crisis: One Year And Counting
A year since the global financial crisis began, NPR News looks back at the momentous events of last September, assesses the damage done and actions taken, and takes stock of the economy today. Read the series overview and stay tuned for more stories through September 16 on Morning Edition and All Things Considered.
