Auction of Artifacts From Creek Council House Museum Opposed

The chief of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation says a planned auction by the Creek Council House Museum Association in Okmulgee is prompting complaints. The sale of more than 200 items is scheduled for Sept. 20 and includes artwork, bows and arrows and other artifacts.

Chief George Tiger told the Tulsa World that family members of those who donated the items are concerned. Tiger says they believethat history should not be for sale.

Council House board member Dana Sigmon says facility isn't big enough to display the entire collection and that the tribe has made no offer to purchase the items. Sigmon says the collection could only be donated to another nonprofit group.

Tiger says his goal is to keep the collection in Okmulgee where the tribe is headquartered
