A state lawmaker has filed legislation that calls for the Oklahoma Legislature to have budget-only sessions every other year.
The measure filed Thursday by Republican Rep. Randy Grau calls for a constitutional amendment that, if approved by voters, would restrict state lawmakers from taking up policy issues and constitutional amendments in even-numbered years, unless the legislation received a three-fourths vote.
Grau authored similar legislation to amend the state constitution last year. He says the best way to improve the budgeting process is to reduce the number of distractions, at least for one year out of every two.
Grau says in years in which the budget is the exclusive goal, lawmakers will have four months to review state government needs and establish funding priorities.
