The University of Oklahoma's president has voided a band policy that prohibited students from making negative public comments about it.

Before President David Boren rescinded the band's rule last week, it stated that student band members could face dismissal from the group if they wrote negative posts about it online. He says the policy found in the university's band handbook obstructs students' free speech.

Boren says he first saw the band handbook on Friday afternoon. He says it wasn't submitted to him or the school's general counsel before it was issued. The Tulsa World reports he wrote an email to school leaders of the Fine Arts college that said band members should be notified that the policy would no longer be enforced.
