Entertaining the Hours of Your Week: Exposing Exhibits In The Metro

Bryan Adams

This week on OneSix8, I'm bringing you exhibits by a rock star, a photographer aiming to highlight gender equality, and one comprised of global artwork.

Oklahoma Contemporary displays Bryan Adams’ “Exposed” exhibit through May 17. Adams may be best known for “Summer of ‘69” or “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You,” but over the past 12 years, he has also worked as a photographer.

Adams has captured images of distinguished personalities from the art, fashion, and entertainment industries, including Lindsay Lohan, Lana Del Ray, and Mick Jagger. This comprehensive retrospective not only exposes the lives of those photographed, but also the innate talent of the rocker-turned-photographer.

Another compelling exhibit recently opened at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. Photographer Phil Borges’ “Stirring the Fire: A Global Movement to Empower Women and Girls” showcases the varying degree of gender issues throughout the world. This exhibit opened last weekend in conjunction with The University of Oklahoma’s annual Puterbaugh Festival, and each piece shows women of all ages facing a variety of different struggles and successes. “Stirring the Fire” closes July 28.

And if you’re interested in art of a different kind, avoid the rain outside and take a look at indoor weather patterns at the National Weather Center’s Biennale. This international exhibit highlights selected works that show international artists’ views on the impact of weather on human experience. While this display is open to the public, you must provide photo identification for entry. Be sure to leave enough time to peruse the 100 pieces of photography, painting, and works on paper.

A variety of other events occur this weekend as well.

The Oklahoma City Ballet and the Oklahoma City Philharmonic present the ballet’s first full-length performance of Swan Lake this weekend. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m., or Sunday afternoon at 2:00.

The Third Friday Celtic Night at Sonder Music, Dance, and Art occurs again on the 19th. Visitors can learn how to dance in a traditional Celtic style, and musicians can play with the band.

And Oklahoma City offers a number of Earth Day opportunities, including a free shred day, lectures on conserving water while landscaping, and complimentary bus rides on Monday.
