Deadly tornados tore through several Oklahoma communities on May 19, 20 and 31, 2013. These are the stories of natural disaster and its aftermath, and of communities healing and recovering.

FEMA Information and Shelters for Oklahoma Tornado Victims

FEMA has assistance for individuals and business owners who sustained losses. Apply for assistance by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362),  online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, or by web enabled mobile device at m.fema.gov. Disaster assistance applicants who use TTY, should call 1-800-462-7585 directly; for those who use 711 or Video Relay Service (VRS), call 1-800-621-3362. 

FEMA lists the following locations as shelters:

The New Castle Storm Shelter, 851 N. Carr in Newcastle, OK

OU Walker Center Dormitory, 1400 Asp Ave., At the University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK

The Moore Community Center, 301 South Howard, Oklahoma City, OK

Saint Andrews United Methodist Church, 2727 SW 119th Street, Oklahoma City, OK

Shawnee High School, 1001 North Kennedy, Shawnee, Ok

Shelter accommodations may be subject to availability.

Karen earned her Master (1974) and Bachelor (1972) degrees from the University of Akron in Ohio, and has worked as Program Director at WMRA-FM, James Madison University in Harrisonburg Virginia and WUIS-FM, University of Illinois at Springfield. She moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico in 1979 to become General Manager of KRWG-FM.
