Girl Scout Cookie Season Is Back In Oklahoma

It’s Girl Scout Cookie season around the country and Oklahoma is no stranger to this tasty tradition. Assignment: Radio’s Pamela Ortega tagged along with some of the scouts and learned that the demand for cookies has yet to slow down.

"Hello would you like to buy Girl Scout cookies?" Girl Scout, Emma says to a customer.

For these girls there is a greater purpose than just selling cookies, at least from Emma’s point of view.

"I like selling girl scouts because I like to tell the customers what flavor they are and give them their cookies and smile and have fun," She said.

For customer Cheryl Cooper there is another reason she buys cookies besides the good taste.

"I was a girl scout myself I grew being a brownie and a girl scout I didn’t get to be a junior or a cadet," Cooper said. "But I am a lover of girl scout cookies."

But the sale of these cookies is a fundraising effort. Karen Public relations and marketing director for the Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma says there is a greater good behind the cause.

"The girl scout has many different adventures for girls we are about giving girls a quality leadership experience and the cookie program is one aspect of the program," She said. "But many of the girls this is their first opportunity to gain skills  that they will use late on in life, as far being to run their own business. Our cookie program is actually developed around five skills and this what we truly teach them and the whole purpose. The first skill is goal setting, the second is decision making, the third is money management the fourth is people skills and the fifth is business ethics. This is what the focus of the cookie program really is."

For some families, selling Girl Scout cookies is a family tradition Caron King mother of the girls says she grew up selling cookies.

"I’ve been a girl scout my whole life I really love girl scouting it instills great values in them, gives them the opportunity to be independent," King said.

Taz-Rihanna King carries a light pink bag with blue, green, yellow and purple boxes, and says she knows why she is selling Girl Scout cookies.

"I enjoy helping people and making people for happy because they’re like I’ve been waiting for them all year well here you go you can get them right here, Oh thank you," She said. "And I give out cards just in case people need more."

As in any case, every one has their favorites. Girl Scout Emma shared hers.

"My favorite has to be the Samoas I like their crispness and their chocolate."

All the proceeds from Girl Scout Cookie sales go to your local Girl Scout Council. Cookies will be on sale until March. To find Girl Scout Cookie sales in your area you can download the newGirl Scout Cookie Finder Appand just type in your zip code.
