OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The widows of two Oklahoma soldiers killed in Afghanistan have been presented the inaugural Oklahoma Gold Star Medal.

Hundreds of soldiers, airmen and their families packed into the House gallery for Tuesday's joint legislative session as part of an appreciation day for the Oklahoma National Guard's 45th Infantry Division.

Jane Horton of Owasso and Megan Ewy of Edmond both received the Gold Star Medal, an award created by the Legislature to honor Oklahoma military members killed in combat.

Horton received the honor on behalf of her late husband, Spc. Christopher Horton, while Ewy was presented the award for her husband, 2nd Lt. Jered Ewy.

Both men were killed in Afghanistan in 2011.

Military officials also honored Pfc. Jeffrey Kerchee of Harrah with a Purple Heart.
