State Sen. Al McAffrey has won the Democratic nomination for central Oklahoma's 5th Congressional District.
McAffrey defeated retired university professor Tom Guild in Tuesday's runoff election for the Democratic nomination. McAffrey faces Republican Steve Russell in the Nov. 4 general election.
McAffrey was one of three Democrats who sought their party's nomination in the June 24 primary election. A runoff was needed because no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote.
McAffrey is seeking the seat being vacated by Republican Rep. James Lankford, the Republican nominee for an open U.S. Senate seat.
McAffrey was first elected as a state representative in 2006 and was the first openly gay person ever elected to the Oklahoma Legislature.
