Nine new flu-related deaths are being reported in Oklahoma.
The Oklahoma State Department of Health said Thursday that the number of deaths now stands at 31, and about 1,000 people have been hospitalized due to the illness.
A record 61 people died in the state due to flu last flu season to break the previous record of 46 deaths recorded in the 2009 season, when the state began tracking the statistic.
Twenty-three of those who have died this flu season were 65 or older while three were in the 50-64 age group, two each in the 18-49 and 5-17 age group, and one was 4 or younger.
The counties with the most deaths are Oklahoma, Tulsa and Garfield with four each.
