House Bill Designed To Raise Awareness Of Earthquake Insurance

State Rep. Cory Williams (D-Stillwater) has filed legislation requiring Oklahoma insurers to offer earthquake coverage to their customers.

Under House Bill 1571, carriers would have to notify their residential customers that a typical homeowners policy does not cover loss from earthquakes, and that a separate earthquake policy could provide less protection than a standard homeowners policy.

Bill Filed Would Allow Attorney General To Investigate Officer-Involved Fatalities

A Democratic state representative has filed a measure that would allow the Oklahoma attorney general to investigate and prosecute officer-involved civilian fatalities.

House Bill 1319 was announced Wednesday by state Rep. Mike Shelton of Oklahoma City. The proposal would give the attorney general the discretion to open an investigation into any death in Oklahoma caused by a law-enforcement officer.

Shelton says the public deserves to know that an impartial, thorough investigation is going to be conducted when a law enforcement officer causes the death of a civilian.

Earthquake Insurance Sees Rise In Oklahoma, Gets More Attention

The recent increase in earthquakes has been alarming citizens and legislators who are questioning the causes and also preparing for more, making earthquake insurance all the more prevalent.

Only a single bill pertaining particularly to earthquakes was filed during the 2014 session.

Oklahoma City Legislator Cancels Gun Law Study

A Democratic state representative from northeast Oklahoma City says he's canceled plans for a study of the state's gun laws because several gun rights groups declined to participate.

State Rep. Mike Shelton says he planned to host an interim legislative study on Tuesday to look at both the state's open carry law, which allows licensed adults to openly display a handgun, and the "Stand Your Ground" law that allows the use of deadly force.

Lawmaker To Examine "Stand Your Ground" Law

A Democratic lawmaker from Oklahoma City says he intends to convene an interim study in the fall to conduct a review of the state's so-called "Stand Your Ground" self-defense law and open carry laws.

Rep. Mike Shelton said Wednesday he wants to bring together members from law enforcement, the mental health community and others to examine if Oklahoma firearms laws "best suit our needs and our situation."

Based on Florida's law, Oklahoma's "Stand Your Ground" law essentially allows law abiding citizens who are attacked in public to use deadly force if they feel threatened.
