As a wicked storm of ice and snow spreads over parts of Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas and heads toward the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, the National Weather Service is again warning that it's getting ugly out there.

Heavy snow is going to fall "from central Kansas through central Missouri and Illinois, into central Indiana" starting Tuesday, the National Weather Service says. Then, the "same system could bring a foot of snow [from] northern Pennsylvania into central New England on Wednesday."

The National Weather Service is warning, once again, that brutally cold weather is going to be spreading across much of the nation, from the upper Midwest down to the deep South and up through the mid-Atlantic, Northeast and New England.

Freezing Fog Ices OKC Bridges, Snarling Traffic

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has closed part of Interstate 40 eastbound in Oklahoma City because of multiple accidents and icy conditions.

The highway patrol says it closed I-40 eastbound at the Dallas and Fort Smith junctions because of the accidents and road conditions. A freezing fog advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday.

The highway patrol says the closure includes the ramps for southbound Interstate 235 and northbound Interstate 35 to eastbound Interstate 40.

There were no immediate reports of injuries with the crashes.

Ice Storm Leaves Tens Of Thousands In The Dark

About 200,000 households are in the dark across the country, after a massive ice storm swept through Midwest and the Eastern Seaboard.

The Associated Press estimates that some 95,000 households are without power in New York, Vermont and Maine. MLive.com reports that 155,000 are without power in Michigan.

UPDATE: Ice Storm Hits Oklahoma; Roads Improve In OKC Metro

UPDATE 12/21/13 8:15 a.m.:

The wind remained light overnight, sparing much of central Oklahoma from widespread power outages.

Conditions on roads in the Oklahoma City metro improved overnight as the temperature increased a degree or two, but authorities are still discouraging travel, especially due to icing on bridges and overpasses.

A winter storm warning remains in effect through 6 a.m. Sunday, with light icing expected through around noon Saturday.

Oklahoma Under State Of Emergency

Traffic is at a crawl along southbound I-235 just north of the Dallas junction late Thursday afternoon. Forecasters say travel will be particularly dangerous overnight into Friday.

All 77 of Oklahoma's counties are under a state of emergency. Gov. Mary Fallin issued the order Thursday afternoon as icy roads and frigid temperatures moved in to the state.

A statement from the governor's office says emergency managers encouraged Fallin to declare the state of emergency before the full brunt of the storm arrives.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service say most of the snow and ice will fall in Oklahoma Thursday night into Friday.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for much of Oklahoma until 6 p.m. Friday. An ice warning is in effect for south central and southeastern portions of Oklahoma.

After a brief lull, a second round of precipitation will begin Thursday evening spreading southwest to northeast.

A winter storm will affect the area with two waves of precipitation Thursday and early Friday. The freezing rain in southeast Oklahoma will cause an ice storm with 1/4 to 3/4 inch accumulation.
