Bradley Manning, the former intelligence analyst who perpetrated the largest leak of classified information in U.S. history, has been acquitted of the most serious charge against him.
Col. Denise Lind, the military judge presiding over the case in Fort Meade, Md., found the Army private not guilty of aiding the enemy, when he released hundreds of thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks. The charge carried a possible punishment of life in prison.

Scores of prisoners were freed from a prison in northwestern Pakistan on Tuesday, after Taliban militants armed with explosives and automatic weapons reportedly stormed the facility. At least nine people, including five guards, died in gun battles and other violence at the prison, according to multiple news outlets.
On July 23, Scott Simon, the longtime host of NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday, posted a tweet to his 1.2 million followers: "I just want to say that ICU nurses are remarkable people. Thank you for what you do for our loved ones." The tweet immediately preceding that one was about Milwaukee Brewers left fielder Ryan Braun.

Physicians are increasingly prescribing expensive scans, narcotic painkillers and other treatments that don't help in most cases, and can make things a lot worse. Since 1 in 10 of all primary care visits are for low back pain, this is no small matter.

With a vote of 93-1, the Senate confirmed James Comey as the next director of the FBI. Comey will replace Robert Mueller.

A South Carolina judge is set to consider how to transfer a girl of Cherokee heritage from her biological father in Oklahoma to the couple seeking to adopt her.
Court records show Matt and Melanie Capobianco have a hearing in family court in Charleston on Wednesday.
The couple has been seeking to adopt the now-3-year-old girl of Cherokee heritage since her birth. The girl's biological father challenged the attempt, saying federal law favored the girl being raised by him.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Oklahoma is calling for an investigation of a drug task force in Caddo County that uses a private contracting company to help run drug stops of motorists on Interstate 40.
The ACLU asked the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to launch an investigation on Monday. It also called for charges to be filed against contractors from Desert Snow, who the ACLU says appear to be impersonating police officers in violation of state law.
