This is from the Manager’s Desk.

Last week was the 48th anniversary of the Public Broadcasting Act. Then President Johnson signed Public Law 90-129 into law on November 7, 1967, creating the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

President Johnson said that just as the nation has set aside land in every state to support land-grant colleges, so was the nation setting aside broadcast frequencies that would be dedicated to the enrichment of all the people. He thought public broadcasting could help the nation model the old Greek marketplace where public affairs took place in view of all the citizens.

Today, as KGOU closes in on 33 years of service, I believe we have continued to be inspired by the vision laid out so many years ago. Service to the community. News and information that is accurate and provides context. A sense of humor and a sense of responsibility. Supported in part by the government but guarded from government or party control. Free and independent.

Happy birthday to public broadcasting!
