Gov. Mary Fallin has issued an executive order on the adoption of the federal Common Core Education Standards.

The governor says the order is intended to "prevent federal overreach" and protect student privacy.

Fallin's order says the federal government won't have input into Oklahoma's Academic Standards formulation, and requires state agencies to "aggressively oppose" federal attempts to adopt standards not reflecting Oklahoma values.

She says the State Department of Education will set standards to keep Washington from "hijacking" Oklahoma's education.

The standards were developed by the National Governors Association, which is currently chaired by Fallin. They have already been adopted in 45 states, including Oklahoma — but there is growing opposition to them, especially among some conservative House legislators.

House Speaker T.W. Shannon (R-Lawton) has called the standards a "federal intrusion into our education system."
