School districts will no longer be able to deduct union dues from Oklahoma teachers' paychecks under a bill signed into law by Gov. Mary Fallin.
Fallin signed the bill on Thursday over the objections of educators who claim they are being unfairly targeted since the bill only applies to associations that collectively bargain on behalf of its members.
Fallin spokesman Alex Weintz says the governor supports the right of teachers to collectively bargain, but doesn't think the state should be in the business of collecting union dues.
Moore teacher Elise Robillard says Fallin's signing of the bill amounts to "sticking a finger in our eye."
The president of the Oklahoma Education Association says she believes the law will strengthen the group's power.
