New Policies And Programs Not The Answer For Families In Crisis

Oklahoma Department of Human Services

Divorce and the effect it has on state government spending in Oklahoma, including welfare programs, is not something that can be improved with new policies or programs. That's according to Marriage and Religion Research Institute Director Patrick Fagan and Jim Struby, director of Adult and Family Servicesat the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.

Both spoke during a Human Services hearing on Thursday at the State Capitol.

Fagan said policymakers need to find ways to talk about difficult and sensitive subjects in their community. He advocated for preserving chastity, focusing on marriage and worshipping God.

Struby said the best things the Department of Human Services can do is to promote work support and healthy relationships and making sure families don't crash under the weight of poverty.
