Oklahoma schoolchildren would be required to recite the Pledge of Allegiance each day under two bills that cleared a legislative committee on Monday.
The Senate Education Committee passed both bills on Monday with just one dissenting vote. Both measures can now be scheduled for a hearing before the full Senate.
One bill would force elementary students to recite the pledge each day, while it would be optional for other public schools in the district. A second bill would require the pledge be recited once each day in "all public schools."
Under current law, the Pledge of Allegiance is authorized but not required. Schools are required to own and display a U.S. flag and instruct students on its history and etiquette.
