Sallisaw's new police chief won't be picked from a hat after all.
Sequoyah County election officials say a runoff election will be held April 1 after Tuesday's contest ended in a tie. Both Terry Franklin and Sandy Girdner received 837 votes, and election officials initially said they'd draw the winner's name from a hat.
But on Wednesday, Election Board Secretary Cindy Osborn said the city attorney's office notified the board that a runoff election would be the appropriate response.
The Southwest Times Record reports that the 837-837 vote count remains preliminary until election results are certified Friday.
