The State Board of Education held a special meeting Tuesday to approve once again previously voted on actions from their Feb. 27 monthly meeting in Enid.
The board neglected to file its change of location from Oklahoma City to Enid with the Secretary of State’s Office 10 days in advance of that meeting as required by the Open Meeting Act, making all votes taken that day invalid.
“This mistake obviously and certainly was unintentional,” State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi said Tuesday after thanking board members for their attendance in light of severe weather.
Barresi said notice of the Enid meeting was posted on SDE’s website Feb. 4 and media, school administrators and other education stakeholders were notified.
“Enid Public Schools was our host and we still thank them for that meeting but the fact of the matter is that Secretary of State’s office must be notified of a venue change 10 days before such meeting and that didn’t happen and I regret the mix up,” she said.
“So here we are, in an abundance of caution, we feel it is important to reconsider all action items from the previous meeting so there can be no question as to the validity of the decisions made by this board.”
