Embattled Tulsa County Sheriff Stanley Glanz says he has no plans to resign, but doesn't plan to seek re-election in 2016.
Glanz told theTulsa World Monday that he won't resign over last month's shooting of an unarmed man by his close friend and volunteer deputy Robert Bates, who has been charged with second-degree manslaughter. Glanz has refused repeated requests for interviews by the AP.
After the shooting, an internal memo released from 2009 indicated that officers worried Bates hadn't completed the required training and that administrators were silencing criticisms of the volunteer.
Glanz announced last week the resignation of his second-in-command, Undersheriff Tim Albin.
A longtime policeman, Glanz was first elected sheriff in 1988. He was unopposed in 2004, 2008 and 2012.
