Study: Statehouse Press Corps In Decline

A declining number of reporters are stalking the hallways of the nation's statehouses.

That's according to a Pew Research report released Thursday. The study found that the number of full-time statehouse newspaper reporters declined by more than a third between 2003 and 2014. There are now just 164 full-time newspaper journalists reporting on the bills, protests and politicians in the nation's 50 state capitals.

NPR assigned correspondent Kelly McEvers to Iraq in 2010 with instructions not to miss a day ahead of the expected troop withdrawal by the end of 2011.

“Then in late 2010, a young man in Tunisia set himself on fire, and literally changed everything,” McEvers says. “At first I was watching it on TV in Baghdad, sitting there thinking, ‘Do we really have to stay in Baghdad? C’mon, you know? Put me in coach!’ asking to be sent out on the stories.”

Tulsa World Trimming Staff

The Tulsa World says it's cutting 50 jobs as it restructures under its new ownership in BH Media Group.

Publisher Bill Masterson announced the cuts Monday. Twelve positions were eliminated immediately in the administrative, information technology and production departments, while the remaining cuts will occur over the next several months.
