KGOU Wins Awards

July 7, 2013

This is from the Manager's Desk.   Last week I noted the passing of fiscal year 2013, and have another observation about KGOU’s success in the last twelve months.

During that time, KGOU received 62 awards for the work of our staff.

KGOU’s students won 12 awards: 5 first-place, 5 second-place and 2 honorable mentions in state-wide and national competitions for their stories that were aired in Assignment Radio, which was produced by Meredith Everitt.

StateImpactOklahoma – Joe Wertz and Logan Layden -- received 15 awards: 6 first-place, 4 second-place and 5 third-place prizes for their work in broadcast and web journalism.

KGOU’s staff received 35 awards last year:  12 first-place, 9 second-place, 13 third-place and 1 honorable mention.

Among these awards, Jim Johnson received 4 awards for his artist interviews, the World Views staff, produced by Brian Hardzinski, was recognized 4 times, and Oklahoma Voices, produced by Kurt Gwartney was awarded 4 prizes.

Great work from the KGOU staff!  Thanks! From the Manager’s Desk, I’m Karen Holp.

Karen earned her Master (1974) and Bachelor (1972) degrees from the University of Akron in Ohio, and has worked as Program Director at WMRA-FM, James Madison University in Harrisonburg Virginia and WUIS-FM, University of Illinois at Springfield. She moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico in 1979 to become General Manager of KRWG-FM.
